Chapter 181: Zombie Siege Practice
“Class monitor?”
Yu Wei looked completely bewildered. Aside from the four people from 606 whom she had only just met today, she knew nothing at all about anyone else at this school, let alone the girl outside claiming to be the class monitor.
“You don’t remember me? I’m the class monitor.”
The class monitor outside gave two little giggles, but her voice was hoarse, like stones scraping against a chopping board.
A layer of goosebumps instantly rose across Yu Wei’s back.
She racked her brain for a response: “C-Class Monitor tongxue, hello. May I ask what you need?”
“I want…” The class monitor’s voice grew lower and lower, so low that Yu Wei had to tilt her head and press it against the door to hear. Only then did a rough voice sound beside her ear: “I want to come in.”
Bang bang bang bang!!
The iron door was suddenly struck violently. Yu Wei let out a startled cry and stumbled several steps backward, almost falling to the ground.
“Let me in, let me in!”
The voice outside was sometimes frenzied and sometimes faint, and the sounds of the door being struck also grew loud and soft. Yu Wei felt her heart and skull thumping along with it, and couldn’t help feeling extremely fortunate that she hadn’t opened the door at the beginning.
Her instinct for staying alive told her that opening the door was impossible, absolutely impossible.
Two days ago, on her way to 606, she had seen several groups of infected people who still had their reason. Some of them not only moved normally, they could even carry out simple conversations—and use this to trick other students into coming outside.
But in fact, these people’s brains had already mutated ahead of time.
After realizing that the “person” outside could not communicate normally, Yu Wei tightly shut her mouth and stopped speaking, letting the person outside ram the door however they wanted, simply pretending she did not exist.
If the sky collapsed, there was still an iron door reinforced by iron chains blocking it, while she was merely a pitiful little thing trembling in fear and waiting for the big shots to return.
Amid the terrifying murmurs and sounds of the door being struck, Yu Wei tearfully ate another packet of potato chips.
Just as she was about to reach for the next packet, the violent sounds outside suddenly stopped.
Thud!
A muffled sound burst from the air, followed by the sound of something heavy hitting the ground. Silence returned outside the door.
Yu Wei froze, then was overjoyed: Had Tang the Big Shot and the others returned?
However, this time she waited and waited, yet there was still not the slightest sound outside. There was neither the sound of the door lock opening nor any knocking.
Then who had just knocked the “class monitor” unconscious?
Could the intelligence of the infected have already advanced to the point where they could go baiting?
Yu Wei was still in a daze when the crisp ringing of a phone suddenly broke the stagnant air. A familiar number appeared on the screen:
It was Tang Xinjue calling!
After listening to Yu Wei recount everything that had just happened as if she had been given a new lease on life, Tang Xinjue thought for two seconds and told her to pull the door open a crack and take a look.
There were three iron chains blocking the inside of the dormitory door. Even if someone were lying in wait, they couldn’t break through this line of defense.
Yu Wei felt greatly reassured. Following her instructions, she walked behind the door and cautiously pressed down the handle.
There was still no movement outside.
She prepared herself mentally, took two deep breaths, then slipped in front of the crack in one swift motion: outside was still completely empty.
“Strange, there really isn’t a single person?”
Yu Wei was also completely unable to make heads or tails of it, and could only close the door again: “But I clearly heard… ah!”
The force of closing the door suddenly met resistance. Yu Wei instinctively shuddered, then hurriedly threw herself against the door and pushed it shut from the inside: “Help, Big Shot, there really is an ambush!”
“An ambush? Where’s the ambush?!”
An even more frightened female voice sounded outside the door. The force pushing the door inward suddenly doubled, directly pushing Yu Wei backward!
Yu Wei: “……”
The door was completely pushed open. A familiar figure quickly darted inside, then shut the door again with lightning speed before patting her own chest in small motions: “Luckily I ran fast, I was almost ambushed.”
Yu Wei slowly came back to herself: “Guo, Guo tongxue?”
Guo Guo widened her eyes: “It’s me. By the way, what kind of ambush was outside just now?”
“……”
After a simple explanation, Guo Guo finally understood: “So there wasn’t an ambush outside the door, you thought I was the ambush?”
Yu Wei nodded rapidly, still shaken: “You knocked down the infected person just now and didn’t make a sound for ages. I thought I was hallucinating.”
Guo Guo had almost figured it out, but became confused again when she heard this: “Wait, when did I fight an infected person? What infected person?”
Yu Wei: “???”
She pointed outside: “The one lying outside. She even said she was your class monitor and told you guys to open the door for her…”
Guo Guo sucked in a breath. Her face, already somewhat pale from all the exercise, seemed to turn even whiter:
“But the infected person you’re talking about should have died two days ago… And when I came back just now, I didn’t see anything outside.”
On the other end of the phone, Tang Xinjue and the other two were also silent for a moment: “Perhaps you two should check again.”
Soon, the 606 dormitory door was opened for the second time. This time, two little heads were stacked together, cautiously peering outside.
As the crack in the door grew wider, a thick trail of blood suddenly appeared in their field of vision, extending outward along the floor. The two followed the blood trail with their eyes and discovered that it disappeared beneath the dormitory door directly opposite.
And that opposite door was currently tightly shut.
Neither of them made a sound.
Either the “class monitor” had gotten up and crawled into the opposite dormitory after falling down; or someone who had come out of the opposite dormitory had knocked it unconscious and then dragged it inside.
Unfortunately, no matter which possibility it was, now was not a good opportunity to investigate.
The two decisively closed the door again, only then feeling the chill that had crept up the backs of their heads slowly subside.
The world had temporarily returned to peace and safety.
It was common knowledge that Guo Guo was timid, and under normal circumstances Yu Wei’s courage wasn’t particularly great either. Letting the two of them stay alone in the dormitory could easily evolve into double the panic—this was something the other three people in 606 knew very well, so the speed at which they rushed back was unprecedentedly fast.
The five people reunited in the dormitory. Clearly, only half a morning had passed, yet it felt as though three autumns had passed.
And after catching her breath for a moment, before Yu Wei had even finished her second packet of potato chips, she heard another piece of bad news:
The four of them had to go out again!
“So, I have to guard the tower alone again?” Yu Wei despairingly opened her mouth, the potato chips falling into her palm.
Tang Xinjue thought for a moment: “If you’re interested, you can also come out with us.”
Yu Wei asked curiously: “Then what are you guys going out to do?”
Tang Xinjue: “External communication.”
Zhang You: “Cooperative hunting.”
Zheng Wanqing: “Take them down!”
Yu Wei: “……”
“I will definitely guard the dormitory seriously and obediently wait for you to come back.”
She raised her hand and swore.
“There’s less than an hour until the airdrop. After subtracting travel time, we have about half an hour. Is that enough?”
Zhang You asked seriously.
Tang Xinjue: “Two aren’t enough, but one is enough.”
Guo Guo understood only part of what she was hearing. Although she had a rough understanding of what the three had experienced that morning, she was still somewhat confused about what they were going to do next:
“Are we going to the east gate cafeteria now? What are we going to do to the stronghold there?”
Tang Xinjue answered: “Repeat what Wanqing did before, open the gates and let the people out.”
In no time, they arrived beside the east gate cafeteria. The four followed Tang Xinjue’s previous route up to the roof. Then they pried open a small door that could lead inside.
Moving aside the metal plate, a narrow wooden ladder revealed one corner from within the pitch-black space.
“But this time, we’re not only going to let the people out, we’re also going to let some things get some air. For example, the food that’s been stored away… And also, some drugs that can react with other medicines, or even suppress the mutation.”
Tang Xinjue leapt into the darkness.
Five minutes later, in the tranquil cafeteria, a scream suddenly erupted:
“Help! Fire!!”
