Chapter 168: Zombie Siege Practice
As the fog dispersed, every scene outside the window was revealed, naturally including the balcony.
It was still the familiar layout, the familiar two dorms sharing one balcony. The familiar scene after pushing open the balcony window even made 606 feel, for one second, as though they had briefly returned to the dorm friendship league.
But this time, the outside world was deathly silent and empty.
“Be careful.”
Tang Xinjue and Zhang You stepped out together.
This time the four still decided to split into pairs. Tang Xinjue and Zhang You went out to explore, while Zheng Wanqing and Guo Guo stayed in the dorm to guard the tower.
If this dorm building did not have a balcony, then any zombie or human that wanted to attack 606 would have to first get through that iron door, unless they could climb six floors barehanded.
But with this balcony, it meant that aside from the danger that might exist in the neighboring dorm itself, zombies also had another option: first break through next door, then flood into the balcony.
As long as the balcony was occupied, they would inevitably be attacked from both front and back at that point. Even if the glass windows were sturdy enough, facing a group of zombies pressed against the glass, crashing and slapping at it for a long period of time would still make one’s san value plummet wildly.
So this was a problem they had to solve. If they had enough time and supplies, Zhang You had even considered temporarily sealing the entire balcony shut, though that would have to wait until after exploring next door.
“There doesn’t seem to be anyone in the room.”
Arriving before the neighboring dorm’s balcony window, the two exchanged a tacit glance and silently pushed open the window and slipped inside.
What entered their eyes was utter chaos.
After already getting used to the expanded dorm space after 606’s modifications, suddenly entering this familiar narrow room again gave the two a slight sense of discomfort.
Especially when the room was in complete disorder, making the space feel even more cramped.
Tang Xinjue swept her gaze across it once and softly said:
“Some of this was accidentally knocked over during impacts, and some was caused by rummaging through things while searching for supplies.”
There truly was no one inside the room. It was not hard to tell that this dorm had previously gone through quite a chaotic situation. In the end, the dorm residents left in a hurry, not even having time to pick up the two bags of chips dropped on the floor.
Tang Xinjue picked up the chips and saw bloodstains on the packaging.
The closer to the door, the more blood there was inside the room. They could even see hair, teeth, and objects resembling skin and fingers.
“There’s a cellphone here.”
Zhang You’s voice suddenly rang out. Tang Xinjue turned her head and looked around twice, yet failed to find her roommate’s figure.
Finally, upon lifting her head, she saw Zhang You carefully searching atop the upper bunk bed.
Zhang You tossed the cellphone down with precision and succinctly said: “You observe and judge first. I’ll organize some useful supplies.”
Tang Xinjue caught the phone. “…Some?”
Her gaze stopped on the huge sack behind Zhang You.
When they came over just now, had she brought such a large sack?
When 606’s balcony window reopened, before anyone appeared, an enormous bulging sack was shoved inside first.
Zheng Wanqing was astonished: “You kidnapped someone back?”
If there was something like that, they should’ve called her along!
Zhang You stepped in afterward, carrying two large bags in her left and right hands, while behind her Tang Xinjue carried another huge sack.
“We didn’t kidnap anyone, just more or less kidnapped an entire dorm.”
Tang Xinjue shrugged. Once the bags were opened, it could be seen that nearly every clean removable object had been packed up and brought over. Even toothpaste, air freshener, and the electric kettle had not escaped.
Zheng Wanqing: “……”
Guo Guo said faintly: “Now you know why You jie was the one sent over.”
As for collecting supplies, Zhang You had always preferred killing by mistake over letting anything slip through. And even the most ordinary item could be squeezed by her for double its use value. As long as she was around, 606 would never lack supplies.
“Zhang You and I sealed the neighboring dorm’s door with two layers, using blankets and extra iron chains, and we also set up a touch alarm. There’s no need now to worry about zombies sneaking through under cover.” Tang Xinjue directly got to the main point.
As for people, although they had not discovered any traces, they found another harvest.
Tang Xinjue took out the cellphone.
Unlike Xiao Hong’s old-style brick phone, this time it was a genuine touchscreen smartphone. Guo Guo fiddled with it a few times and regretfully said: “Too bad we can’t unlock it.”
This kind of phone could only be unlocked with fingerprints and passwords. At most they could only light up the screen and see a few newly popped-up half-cut messages, with no way to use the other functions.
Compared to that, the phones they had stuck inside chat software could at least still mass-send a “you there?” to their contact lists.
Tang Xinjue, however, said: “It’s not necessarily completely impossible to unlock.”
Guo Guo: ?
Following Tang Xinjue’s line of sight, she saw Zhang You deftly pull out a bag of well-preserved plastic film from the pile of supplies.
“These are matching fingerprints found near the phone. Can’t guarantee they’re complete, but we can try.”
Zhang You’s tone remained as calm as ever, as though she were announcing the dinner menu.
Guo Guo: ??
“You jie, don’t tell me you also know how to make fingerprint molds?”
“There were too many random tools obtained from the game. To avoid wasting them, I could only learn a few more skills.” Zhang You replied without even lifting her head from work.
“And this phone model is at least a few years old. There’s still room to exploit loopholes. But this is my first attempt, so it might not succeed. You all should prepare yourselves mentally.”
……
Fifteen minutes later, a brand-new phone interface appeared before the four of them.
Guo Guo was completely convinced: “Is there anything in the world you can’t do?”
She suspected that if necessary, even if a ghost’s smartphone were placed here, Zhang You could still find a way to unlock it.
After hearing Guo Guo’s casual remark, Zhang You’s eyes instead lit up as she mused: “If there were supernatural abilities or props assisting, it might not be impossible…”
Guo Guo: ???
This topic failed to continue, because the complete historical messages on the neighboring dorm’s phone screen quickly attracted everyone’s attention.
[Fangfang are you in the dorm? Can you hear the knocking? Hurry and open the door, An’an is about to not make it, you don’t want anything to happen to her either right? Otherwise we’ll all be people who stood by and did nothing, hurry and open the door!]
……
[How many times have I told you already, watch An’an first while I go find the infirmary. I’ll be right back. Stop sending me messages already, you’re affecting my journey.]
……
[You there? Emergency!]
[Forget about An’an, come save me first! I’m hiding in the laundry room of Building 13, there are people everywhere outside, no, they’re not completely people anymore. Anyway hurry and come save me! I already sent you the map, hurry]
[You there? Why aren’t you replying? Are you on the way?]
[Fangfang?]
[
Fangfang!!!]These were all messages sent from another number. The last readable one stopped there, followed by countless notification vibrations, garbled text, and even video bombardments, yet the owner of this phone never picked up a single one.
“She also replied to some messages.”
Tang Xinjue scrolled from beginning to end. Compared to the other side’s frantic bombardment, the messages sent by “Fangfang” were very few, only asking a few questions in the middle, such as when the other party would return, and that An’an’s condition was very frightening.
Combining all the messages in that day’s communication records, the situation of the neighboring dorm was not difficult to guess.
“There were four roommates in total. At first only one person was inside the dorm. The three outside may have been among the first infected by the virus, or may have been attacked by the earliest infected people. After losing one person on the way, the remaining two escaped back to the dorm.”
Tang Xinjue reconstructed the events.
“At that time only one person should have been injured, while the other two were healthy. The girl constantly sending messages was called Qiuqiu in the records. She threw An’an to Fangfang to take care of, then quickly left under the excuse of going to the infirmary.”
But opening the dormitory district map sent by Qiuqiu showed that the “Dormitory Building 13” where she was located and the school infirmary were completely opposite directions.
She wanted to escape alone, but simply failed to succeed.
At the same time over here, the girl named An’an had clearly mutated very quickly. Fangfang was frightened enough to climb onto the bed to hide, and the cellphone was also left behind there at that moment.
Judging from the mess inside the room and the bloodstains by the door, the two were likewise more likely dead than alive.
“The timing of these events happened exactly before we entered the dungeon, which means from the moment we entered, the surrounding environment was already full of danger.”
Tang Xinjue sighed lightly, then used Fangfang’s phone to continue opening the contact list and selected everyone for a mass message:
[Are you there? Where are you?]
She did not even spare An’an’s and Qiuqiu’s accounts.
Guo Guo: “…Jue shen, which is more dangerous, zombies or you?”
“—zzzzt—”
The moment the phone was set down, the radio suddenly emitted sound once more.
The half hour had arrived exactly, and the Student Union radio station turned on punctually.
“Dear students, hello everyone, this is still the Student Union radio station, I’m reporter Lili~”
This time another familiar female voice sounded. She first leisurely repeated everything the previous broadcast had said, then vividly expressed sympathy for the students. By the time she finally entered the main topic, five minutes had already passed.
“Ah, it seems I forgot to tell everyone, each radio broadcast can’t exceed ten minutes at most. Looks like our time is limited, so we can only inform everyone of two pieces of news.”
Though her words sounded regretful, not a trace of regret could be heard in Lili’s tone. Instead, she sounded extremely gleeful over others’ misfortune:
“One good news and one bad news, which would everyone like to hear first?”
“Ah, I forgot again, this isn’t an interactive radio station. The Student Union can’t see everyone’s feedback opinions. Then Lili can only decide herself and tell the good news first!”
Lili giggled several times before continuing:
“According to the Student Union’s diligent statistics, we discovered there are a total of 523 students on campus who have been completely infected. The good news is that these pitiful
students are mainly distributed in the teaching district. Students staying inside the dormitory buildings are still very safe.”“As for the other bad news, due to virus damage and personnel shortages, both the power supply and water supply systems have suffered damage. According to reliable information, once the damage reaches a certain degree, the pipelines are very likely to release large amounts of unknown gas, forming dense fog across the campus and affecting everyone’s visibility.”
“But the infected will not be affected at all.”
Lili giggled: “Although we do not support students leaving the dormitories, plans can never keep up with changes, right? Let us wish well for
students lacking supplies, and hope they can quickly find a method to survive this disaster. Then this time’s broadcast ends here, let us meet again in one hour…”Just as she was about to finish the last sentence, halfway through speaking she was interrupted by a sudden phone ringtone:
“…Eh?”
Lili unconsciously let out a surprised trailing sound.
How could someone possibly call at a time like this?
Or rather, how could anyone possibly know the Student Union radio station’s contact information?
The ringtone continued. After several seconds of silence inside the radio, the call was still connected.
Then, a voice equally familiar to them rang out from within.
“Hello.”
Tang Xinjue spoke from the other end of the new cellphone.
