Chapter 166: Zombie Siege Practice
The instant that face entered her field of vision, Guo Guo reacted on instinct and slammed the door shut with all her strength! The door banged heavily closed, trapping the thing outside.
At the same time came the dull thud of a head being smashed by the door. Judging from the force of the impact, if whatever was outside had been “human,” it should already have been knocked unconscious.
What happened to the thing outside, Guo Guo didn’t know. But she herself collapsed flat onto the floor with a thump. Beneath her protective helmet, her little face was drained completely pale, and for several seconds she couldn’t recover.
The visual shock of that moment was almost on par with the first time Xiao Hong had lunged into her face. She had nearly thrown out a purification skill on reflex before remembering her abilities were useless against zombies.
Although at moments like this she desperately wished she had Zheng Wanqing possessing her body instead, the more important issue was—
Why was she always the one getting jump-scared?!
The more she thought about it, the more wronged she felt. So when she threw herself at Zheng Wanqing and burst into tears, Zheng Wanqing thought she’d been bitten in the head and immediately yanked off her protective helmet to check for wounds.
Guo Guo’s crying stopped instantly. “Da xiaojie, I didn’t get bitten! Stop pulling my hair, there’s barely any left already!”
Thunk. Thunk. Thunk.
The heavy knocking at the door instantly plunged the dorm into silence.
Clearly, the owner of that face hadn’t been knocked out. Yet it also wasn’t crashing and shrieking like the zombies everyone imagined. Instead, it began knocking rhythmically on the door.
None of the four spoke first. The buzzing vibration of incoming phone messages became especially distinct.
[Class Monitor: I came to find you.]
[Class Monitor: Weren’t you looking for me?]
[Class Monitor: Hurry and open the door, let me in.]
Holding their phones, the four exchanged looks.
The bloody, mangled face outside the door… was that really their class monitor?
Then was she human—or zombie?
The group chat notifications kept popping up one after another, all urging them to open the door.
Tang Xinjue stepped up to the entrance and spoke clearly, “Did you send these messages?”
“Yesss… me.” After a pause, the girl outside answered slowly, her voice as sluggish as her knocking. “I remember you. Your surname is Guo, Student Guo…”
Tang Xinjue replied, “My surname is Tang.”
The figure outside paused, but immediately ignored that detail and repeated stiffly, word by word, “Didn’t you want to ask me about what happened? I’m here now. Let me in, and I’ll tell you.”
Tang Xinjue unfolded the paper Guo Guo had just picked up. It was filled with chaotic red handwriting repeating things like impossible, run, save me—nothing truly useful.
She didn’t agree immediately. “There’s no one in the hallway right now. We can talk perfectly well through the door.”
The thing outside refused. “Through the door… can’t hear clearly.”
Tang Xinjue didn’t hesitate. “Fine.”
Then she tapped twice on her phone screen.
A new interface instantly popped up:
[The other party accepted.]
On-screen appeared a blood-soaked face viewed from above. The bloodshot eyeballs seemed to react a moment later as they shifted downward toward the screen. Faint traces of confusion and blankness could still be seen within them.
Tang Xinjue nodded politely. “Hello. The audio is perfectly clear now. You can talk.”
Class Monitor: “……”
The other side’s lips twitched twice, but no sound came out. A moment later, only the notification remained:
The heavy knocking resumed.
“So she absolutely has to come inside?” Zheng Wanqing, impatient by nature, was about to rush over when Zhang You stopped her.
Zhang You shook her head. “Don’t let her in. We still don’t know the characteristics of the zombies in this instance.”
Was the infection viral, or some other mutation? Did mutated zombies retain intelligence? How was the infection transmitted? Could zombies communicate with each other?
If they let a zombie into the dorm, would the blood or scent it left behind attract others?
Everything was unknown.
Tang Xinjue put away her phone and decided, “I’ll go.”
The thing outside couldn’t come in—but they could go out.
And if one person had to step outside, then considering speed, strength, and reflexes, Tang Xinjue was obviously the best choice.
But Zheng Wanqing immediately cut in, “Let me do it. I’m going out!”
Her reason was simple: that ugly thing had nearly scared Guo Guo to death, and she wanted to vent some anger for her.
Guo Guo was deeply touched. “Da xiaojie—”
Zheng Wanqing replied mercilessly, “Being cowardly isn’t something to be proud of. Starting tomorrow you’re learning boxing with me!”
Guo Guo: …What’s wrong with being timid? Timid people live long!
In the end, faced with Zheng Wanqing’s insistence, Tang Xinjue quickly settled it. “Stop arguing. We’ll both go out. Two people can easily stand outside the door.”
Zheng Wanqing blinked. “Oh. True.”
So after the thing outside had knocked for who knew how long, the dorm door finally opened.
Before the figure outside could react, two pitch-black silhouettes darted out and positioned themselves on either side of her.
Look left: black from head to toe, gripping an iron shovel.
Look right: one long black figure carrying a spade over their shoulder.
Class Monitor: “……”
After seeing the two dressed like this, the blood-covered girl froze for several seconds before realizing the dorm door had already shut again behind them.
Her eyes rotated stiffly as she realized she’d been played.
A trace of anger surfaced on her rigid face. The dried blood crusted there looked close to cracking apart. “You… won’t let me in?”
The figure on the right answered openly, “Yep. What if you mutate?”
The class monitor’s eyes bulged as though they might fall out. “Who mutated? I’m just… injured! If you won’t let me in, heheh, then don’t think you’ll learn any information.”
The figure on the left said calmly, “Compared to that, wouldn’t you rather explain how the injuries on your face happened?”
Only now, face-to-face, could Tang Xinjue confirm that the wounds weren’t bite marks. They looked more like repeated lacerations from scraping against sharp objects, tearing the skin apart.
“Injuries?” The class monitor froze. She raised a hand to touch her face, but the sleeve stuck to her elbow ripped apart with a tearing sound, dragging adhered skin down with it and exposing large swaths of raw red muscle tissue.
Zheng Wanqing: …And you’re still claiming you haven’t mutated?
With injuries that severe, an ordinary person would already have fainted from pain. How could she still be moving around?
Failing to touch her face, the girl mumbled thickly, “Let me into the dorm first, and I’ll tell you. Otherwise… soon you’ll become just like me.”
Her attitude was extremely firm. She absolutely refused to speak unless allowed inside, even as blood dripped onto the floor into a sticky little puddle. Even when Tang Xinjue offered bandages and medical supplies in exchange for information, she refused to budge.
“Well, then there’s no helping it.”
Tang Xinjue and Zheng Wanqing exchanged a glance. Tang Xinjue shook her head and stepped back.
The class monitor thought they had finally relented. Her mouth curled upward as she turned toward the door—
Only to see Zheng Wanqing removing the shovel from her shoulder.
Gripping both ends of it, she snapped it across her knee in the next instant. The shovel head bent downward like a spoon!
Zheng Wanqing got straight to the point: “Which is harder—your skull, or this shovel?”
Class Monitor: “……”
First diplomacy, then force.
Under the threat of violence, the class monitor surrendered quickly and finally began slowly recounting the background story.
According to rumors, an unknown virus had leaked from the school laboratory the previous night. By the time it was discovered that morning, the virus had already spread across the entire campus, and some students had already mutated.
“What did they mutate into?” Zheng Wanqing pressed.
The class monitor looked at her like she was stupid. “Haven’t you watched zombie movies?”
Zheng Wanqing choked.
She hadn’t expected the rule of “people in zombie worlds have never seen zombie media” to fail so completely inside this instance.
Tang Xinjue asked, “Every zombie movie has different settings. Which type are you referring to?”
The class monitor thought for a few seconds, irritated. “Don’t know. Only the school administration knows details like that. Hah. But they already ran away.”
According to her story, many teachers, administrators, and some students who learned the truth early had already evacuated in advance. By the time everyone else found out, it was too late.
Now, even if they overcame all the dangers on the road, they still couldn’t leave campus—because just moments ago, the school gates had been completely sealed shut.
They were trapped here.
“This is only the beginning. Zombies will increase like crazy. Only dorms are safe—but how long can you last?”
The class monitor laughed darkly, clearly taking pleasure in their predicament. She sounded completely different from how she’d spoken in the group chat before.
“If you want to survive, there’s only one way: contact the student union and wait… wait for instructions.”
Tang Xinjue’s brows lifted slightly.
At last, a critical clue had appeared.
The class monitor continued on her own, “But to contact them, you need a special radio issued by the student union. You don’t have one.”
Her smile stretched unnaturally wide. “Only I do.”
Let her into the dorm, and she’d hand over the radio.
In a life-or-death situation like this, nobody should reasonably refuse such a trade.
Yet the people of 606 still didn’t agree immediately. Instead, after a brief pause:
“Student union… radio?”
Tang Xinjue sent Zhang You a message on her phone. A few seconds later, the dorm door opened and a radio was passed out.
She took it and shook it lightly in front of the class monitor. “You mean this?”
The girl’s suddenly widened eyes and expression of utter disbelief already gave them the answer.
“You… how do you have…?”
She stared fixedly at the radio, utterly unable to understand.
Tang Xinjue put away the radio they’d obtained all the way back from the [Four Seasons Protection Guide] and smiled. “After taking enough exams, you naturally accumulate a little of everything. Thanks for the reminder.”
Otherwise, they never would have realized that a quest item from several instances ago would suddenly become useful again!
The class monitor’s face twitched slightly. After a long silence she struggled onward:
“I also know lots of things. Supplies, weap—” The word weapons died in her throat when she saw their shovels. “Lots of food. I know where it all is. You don’t want to starve to death, right? I can… I…”
Before she could finish, however, her voice became increasingly thick and sticky, as though something were surging inside her throat. Her neck convulsed unnaturally.
“I…”
She began moving forward slowly toward Tang Xinjue and Zheng Wanqing.
“I know—”
Suddenly she lunged forward and bit hard at Zheng Wanqing!
The sound of metal grinding against teeth rang out together with a cry of pain. Zheng Wanqing drove her knee upward and sent the girl flying backward. The latter covered her mouth with both hands, making muffled whining noises as she staggered away like ripped cotton stuffing spilling out.
Meanwhile, the one who’d been bitten sounded surprised.
“I’ve fought plenty of monsters since replacing this arm, and lots have tried to smash it. But you’re the first one who tried biting it.”
She tore open the already damaged sleeve of her coat, revealing a flash of silver underneath.
On the smooth metal arm was a perfectly neat row of broken teeth marks.
The author has something to say:
Three great sorrows in life: customer service never offline, baldness incurable, and zombies without teeth.
